Prompting vs a fixed instruction: why consistency matters

Why typed prompts drift

Ask for a summary on Monday and key points on Thursday and you will get two different documents. Neither is wrong; they are answers to different questions. But if that output feeds a meeting, a quote or a client response, the variation is a problem you cannot see until it costs you something.

Two people make it worse. Each develops their own way of asking, so the business ends up with two standards and no way to compare last month with this month.

What a fixed instruction contains

• The input, named exactly — this document, these notes, this period.
• The steps, in order, including the checks that must happen.
• The output structure — headings, order, level of detail.
• The non-negotiables — what must always appear, and what must never happen.
• The human check — who approves it before it leaves the business.

The three things consistency buys you

• Comparability — this week's output can be put beside last week's and read as a trend.
• Delegation — a new staff member can run the task on their first day.
• Defensibility — you can show a client or principal exactly how the work was done.

Exploring is still worth doing

Loose prompting is the right mode when you are working out whether a task is even possible. Try it roughly, see if the output is close, then decide.
