What is a large language model — and what is a specialist AI service?

What an LLM actually does

An LLM works with language. Give it a document and a clear instruction and it will read the document, follow the instruction and write the result. That covers a surprising share of office work: reading a contract, comparing two versions, turning notes into a letter, pulling the commitments out of an email chain.

It is not a database and it does not know your business. It only knows what you give it in the request, plus what it learned from general text. That is why the instruction and the input matter so much — and why the tasks we build always specify both.

Where it is strong

• Reading long documents and pulling out what matters.
• Comparing two things and reporting the differences.
• Turning rough notes into the format somebody else needs.
• Explaining something technical to a non-technical reader.

Where it needs a person

An LLM will occasionally state something confidently that is wrong, and it has no sense of the commercial consequence. So anything with money, legal effect or a signature attached gets a human check before it leaves the business. Our builds are designed that way on purpose: the tool prepares, a person decides.

It is also not legal, financial or safety advice, no matter how well it reads.

What a specialist AI service is

A specialist service is ordinary software with AI inside it, sold for one job. A voice product that answers your phone and books jobs. A document product that reads supplier invoices into your accounting system. A transcription product that records meetings.

You get less setup work and a purpose-built screen. You pay more per job, and you are usually billed per call, per page or per minute on top of the subscription.

How to choose

• The job is reading, writing or comparing — an LLM, set up properly, is almost always cheaper.
• The job needs to answer a phone, read scanned paper at volume, or sit inside another system — look at a specialist.
• Both would work — start with the LLM, because you already have it and one seat covers many tasks.
